Personally The Smiths and James are my number 1 and 2 bands,
(with The Smiths winning I'm afraid)

But I suppose many James fans will be too young to remember the delights of "Some girls are bigger than others"

My first experience of James (though I didn't realise it at the time) was them supporting The Smiths in Northampton (1984)

"And if you must, go to work - tomorrow
Well, if I were you I wouldn't bother
For there are brighter sides to life
And I should know, because I've seen them
But not very often ..."

All backed up by Marr's sublime guitar.

STILL ILL

I have tried to like The Smiths, but i just cant really get into them. But unlike some on here...i respect the individuals right to like whoever they want...without the need to start belittling the act in question. But...also being a u2 fan....am used to that sort of shit. you gotta be thick skinned to be a u2 fan

I would say U2 and The Smiths are different ends of the spectrum, very different musically and lyrically....But hey, horses for courses.

Enjoy the James gigs if you are going to any this winter.

Indeed they are....dont mean we cant like em tho eh. Who knows....maybe in time....as has happened to me lately....i will discover that The Smiths are a lot more listenable than i had given them credit for.
And...i know u2 rate The Smiths, coz i have heard bono talk about Morrisey and Edge going on about Johnny Marr.

To be honest The Smiths are the Musicians group.

Very rare to hear anyone from inside the industry slag them off. Radiohead, Stone Roses and Oasis (Noel Gallagher) huge fans plus media luvvies Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross, Harry Hill, Sean Lock, Noel Fielding etc etc....

Oh and not forgetting PM Cameron who says The Smiths and The Beatles are the greatest UK bands of all time (oh dear, may have shot myself in the foot there!!)

I think I've only liked two songs from The Smiths. I really don't know all of their songs and the two I do like hasn't moved me to go seek more.

Now U2 I really liked during the 80's and early 90's. I think the.. was it the Pop live video tour where Bono acts like he's humping the camera and spits a wad into the lens...I kind of lost interest after that. Even though they're still making great songs.

The Beatles - I like 40 songs I'm guessing. My first favorite is "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". I was very young back in 69 or 70, summertime with that song on the radio. Now it brings back my childhood memories.

Led Zeppelin I like better than than the two of these. No Quarter will be the most remembered - Live version was better tho. Houses Of The Holy album
was my favorite..

james are my favorite because I like almost all of their songs. Different can be sometimes better..
The thing I really like about the music of james is, well it's not the same old 20 or 50 songs that are being made by everyone else. james are the best band, for me..

But I'm me and I'll never follow the trends of others if it doesn't fit me personally.

i`m about to turn 35 this month, and i pretty much grew up with the smiths.

i truly discovered james just a few years ago and became a huge fan after seeing them live at san fransisco on 2008.

gonna be at brixston next friday (after watching suede on tuesday), but for me the smiths will remain at no. 1. james are up next, thankfully so!

A Smiths song called ''Barbarism Begins at Home' on the album 'Meat is Murder' would really suit Booth's high energy style.

They used to support The Smiths back in the day and Morrissey was always biggin' James up...

I wonder if they still get on or have they done the usual Rock 'n' Roll thing and had a big girlie fall out???
